Jefferson’s Grape: The Story of Wine in Virginia

There is something quietly profound about standing in a Virginia vineyard in the early morning, mist settling over the Blue Ridge, the rows of vines stretching toward the horizon in perfect order, and knowing that someone stood in nearly this exact spot over two centuries ago with the very same hope. Thomas Jefferson was many things. A statesman. A philosopher. An architect. But he was also, with great devotion, a man who believed that Virginia soil was capable of producing something the world had not yet tasted.

Jefferson imported vines from France and planted them on the slopes of his home in Virginia, convinced that the terroir of this region held the same promise as the great wine estates of France. He tended those vines with patience and precision, corresponding with European winemakers, adjusting his methods, never quite giving up on the vision. He never fully saw it realized in his lifetime. But the instinct was right.

The Monticello AVA, the American Viticultural Area that now carries the name of his estate, stretches across Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Orange, and Nelson counties at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its granite-laced soils, elevated terrain, and distinct continental climate create the kind of natural acidity and structure that Chardonnay thrives on. Wine Enthusiast named it the 2023 Wine Region of the Year, a recognition that would not have surprised Jefferson at all. He simply would have wished the news had arrived a little sooner.

At Trump Winery, we have always understood the weight of that legacy. America’s Winery sits on this same land, draws from this same soil, and carries forward the belief that Virginia is not just a wine region worth respecting. It is a wine region worth celebrating.

Our 2023 Chardonnay Reserve is the expression of that belief. Crafted with the same precision Jefferson sought in his own vineyards, it offers layers of bright fruit, elegant structure, and a finish that lingers with the kind of quiet confidence only great terroir can produce. At the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup, the Commonwealth’s most rigorous wine competition judged blind among 113 producers, the 2023 Chardonnay Reserve was awarded a Gold Medal. Trump Winery took home more Gold Medals than any other winery in the competition.

Jefferson planted vines here because he believed Virginia deserved a place among the finest wine regions in the world. Two centuries later, the evidence is in the glass.
